Seminar: Soft-Launch of ISEAS Library E-catalogue: Eye of the Architect: The Made Wijaya Photographic Archive

Made Wijaya (alias Michael White) was a renowned Bali-based, Australian-born, architect and landscape designer, best known for working on international projects for such celebrities as David Bowie. He was the author of pioneering books on Balinese vernacular architecture. He also authored more recently a study on Javanese Majapahit art and architecture. Just before passing away in August 2016, he donated his entire photographic collection on architecture and garden design to the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak library. The photographic collection centres on vernacular architecture of the archipelago, covers other parts of the world, including his own designs.

This will be an occasion to commemorate Made Wijaya’s achievements as an architect and most of all as an unflagging explorer of Javanese and Balinese rituals, arts, architectural forms and design and their survival into the twenty first century. Speakers will discuss his legacy and the importance of his research for the understanding of cultural and architectural history, and give the public a first glimpse into this remarkable documentation.

About the Speakers

Soedarmadji Damais has founded and continues to head important arts and heritage bodies in Indonesia, such as the Indonesian Arts Cooperation Body (BKKI). Through his work as director of the Jakarta History Museum (1989-1999) he was responsible for the revival of the old centre of Indonesia’s capital. His publications include Majapahit Terracotta, The Soedarmadji Jean Henry Damais Collection (2012).

Richard Hassell is co-founder of leading architectural firm WOHA, established in 1994 with Wong Mun Summ. WOHA’s many prizes include the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and they have pioneered environmental and socially sustainable living. Mr Hassell has lectured at NUS and many other international venues.

Adrian Vickers is a professor at the University of Sydney, and researches, publishes and teaches on the cultural history of Southeast Asia. His books include Bali: A Paradise Created (new edition 2012), and the award-winning, The Pearl Frontier (2015), co-authored with Julia Martínez. He is a Visiting Fellow at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.

Hélène Njoto is a Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre Visiting Fellow specialising in early modern Javanese art and architecture. Her work questions cultural exchanges in Maritime Southeast Asia through the study of Early Islamic Art of the Northern Coast of Java. Dr Njoto has published on Javanese mosques and coastal art, as well as on cultural heritage and art collecting and the art market in Indonesia.
