China’s Culture and Its Transformation in Southeast Asia

REGIONAL SOCIAL AND CULTURAL STUDIES PROGRAMME

About the Hybrid Workshop

The term “culture” here is used to refer to Chinese religions (the three organized religions, also popular religions), language, literature, music and performing arts. The study of the above theme is particularly significant as some observers misconceive Chinese culture in Southeast Asia as purely “Chinese”, as if it had not been influenced by local nationalism. In reality, Chinese culture in Southeast Asia is imbued with distinct differences that set apart from mainland China. Nevertheless, the question remains if the rise of China has made the further transformation of local Chinese culture difficult, if not impossible. This workshop aims to examine the following:

• The current status of Chinese religions, language, literature, music and performing arts in Southeast Asia.
• Their local characteristics
• Their position in both local Chinese and non-Chinese local society
• Their problems and prospects.

Scholars from Southeast Asia have been invited to present papers to deal with the above theme. Revised papers would eventually be published as a book.

Please refer to the programme here for further details (updated as of 25 September 2023).
