A Credible Alternative? Perikatan Nasional’s View of Malaysia’s Future

MALAYSIA STUDIES PROGRAMME

About the Hybrid Seminar

Perikatan Nasional (PN), the alliance of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (BERSATU), Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS), Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (GERAKAN) and Parti Maju Sabah (SAPP), has been Malaysia’s federal opposition for nearly two years. With Anwar Ibrahim’s coalition government aiming to ride out a full term, his administration must deliver crucially in the next 2-3 years. At the same time, PN’s strategy and performance in holding the government to account, presenting policies, governing four Peninsular states, and expanding its electoral base will determine whether it offers Malaysians a credible alternative.

PN has capitalised on persisting cost of living woes and challenged the coalition government’s mixed record on reforms. The alliance closes ranks when called upon, but reports of rifts between BERSATU and PAS occasionally surface. Internally, PAS appears to be lining up a succession plan, but BERSATU has pre-empted contests for the top leadership posts to maintain party unity, and has grappled with the dilemma of its six elected MPs who have pledged support for Anwar Ibrahim. While PN maintains its dominant position among the Malay-Muslim electorate, its traction among minority groups and in East Malaysia remains limited.

At this seminar, a next-generation leader of BERSATU will analyse Malaysia’s current state of affairs and discuss Perikatan Nasional’s perspective on Malaysia’s future.
