Ms Moe Thuzar, ISEAS Fellow, featured on CNBC: “Academic: Don’t expect overnight changes in Myanmar”

 

With a smooth transition, the new NLD government now has to tackle a long list of priorities amidst high expectations from domestic and external audiences.

The main objective to change the current Constitution and reducing the military’s influence will require more closed-door diplomacy and patience on both sides.

Ms Moe Thuzar, ISEAS Fellow, opined that constitutional changes granting Suu Kyi the right to be Myanmar’s president won’t be immediate.

Dr Hélène Njoto, ISEAS Visiting Fellow, analysed the features of lions on five mausolea in NSC Lecture

 

As part of the Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre (NSC), ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute organised a seminar on “Javanese Mouse Deer and Chinese Lions: Early Islamic Sinicised Imprints in Java’s North Coast Sculpture (15th – early 17th century)” on Tuesday, 29 March 2016.

The lecture was delivered by Dr Hélène Njoto, Visiting Fellow, Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre, ISEAS. 
Dr Njoto analysed the features of the lions on five mausolea and related some of them to the Chinese lion and qilin and other correlated motifs (baizi, etc.) from Vietnamese art.
She also provided a comparative analysis of the carved lion forms in other contexts (royal and cult regalia) to show the spread of sinicised motifs outside the funerary complexes during the 1.5-hour lecture, attended by close to 40 participants.
