UMNO’s U-Turn on RUU 355: What Makes Coalitions Stick in Malaysia?

Prime Minister Najib Razak’s announcement that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government is not going to table the proposed changes to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355), or RUU 355, came as a surprise to many.

The Myanmar Studies Programme at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, in collaboration with the ISEAS Regional Socio-Cultural Studies Programme, invited Dr Jayde Lin Roberts, a lecturer at the University of Tasmania currently living in Yangon as a U.S.Fulbright Fellow for Burma/Myanmar, to  share her insights on Myanmar’s urbanisation and its relation to ideas about national development.

Dr Leo Suryadinata, Visiting Senior Fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute launched his recently published book, The Rise of China and the Chinese Overseas: Beijing’s Changing Policy in Southeast Asia and Beyond (ISEAS), on 2 March 2017. The Guest of Honour and the speaker for the Book Launch cum Seminar was Professor Wang Gungwu, a leading historian on China and the Chinese overseas.
