Porphant Ouyyanont to receive research prize for 2016, his work recognized by The National Research Council of Thailand

 

“The National Research Council of Thailand has recognized the work of former ISEAS Thailand Studies Programme visiting fellow Dr Porphant Ouyyanont on ‘Siam in the International Economy in the Reign of King Prajadhipok’ with one of its thirty research prizes for 2016.  Dr Porphant will receive his prize, awarded to recognize his contribution to the field of economics, during a ceremony on 2 February 2017, at the start of Thailand’s annual Inventors’ Days.”

Dr Porphant Ouyyanont is a former Visiting Fellow, Thailand Studies Programme, at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute.

Despite the rising trend of religious intolerance marked by the blasphemy case against Jakarta’s Chinese-Christian governor Ahok, recent developments show that hard-line ideologies and attitudes are facing protests and rejections in many regions of the archipelago. These come from various ethnic and religious groups, such as the Dayaks in Kalimantan, the Sundanese in West Java, as well as moderate Muslim groups such as regional chapters of Ansor Youth Movement of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).

Last week, General Secretary of Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong paid an official visit to China, the first since his re-election at the CPV’s 12th Congress in January 2016. President Xi Jinping accorded Mr Trong the highest level of protocol with a 21-gun salute and a special tea party arranged in his honour. In the final leg of the visit, Mr Trong went to Hangzhou, a major city that represents strong historical, political, and economic ties between the two countries.
