Malaysia’s “Perceived” Green Wave: The Electorate and Youth Behaviour

REGIONAL SOCIAL AND CULTURAL STUDIES PROGRAMME

About the Hybrid Seminar

The presentation explores the underlying factors contributing towards the surge of Malay/Muslim support towards Perikatan Nasional (PN) during the 15th Malaysian general election and the six states’ election held in November 2022 and August 2023, respectively. The research explores the impact of national and state-level factors such as the economy and after-effects of the pandemic, leadership, and the effectiveness of the competing coalitions in articulating their vision and offerings to the electorate during the election campaign. The large swing of support from Barisan Nasional (BN) to Perikatan Nasional has given rise to questions about the “Green Wave,” which pre-supposes that the rise in support is due to Malay/Muslim’s electorate attraction towards the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), which is a principal party within the Perikatan Nasional coalition. Is the rise of Perikatan Nasional predicated on ideological grounds or was it due to other factors such as economic pressures, decline of UMNO or other factors? How did various segments of the Malay electorate respond to PN’s messaging, and how did it impact their election choices? Can the behaviour of the electorate represent the general sentiments of the youth? The presentation explores these questions and seeks answers from analysing election results, previous qualitative and quantitative survey findings and feedback from opinion leaders.
